This week at Monday Club, we tried something a little different.
Instead of everyone working on the same thing at the same time, we split the group into two teams. The first groupings got to work building the beat / hook, then halfway through the session we switched things around.
It's a different way of writing music, and definitely one that asks you to think beyond your own tastes. When you're creating as a group, you've got to leave a bit of room for other people's ideas too. Not everyone is going to be fully invested in a strict 175 BPM jungle beat... I know, mental.
That challenge is kind of the point though.
Learning how to collaborate means learning when to lead, when to listen, and when to trust that someone else's idea might take the track somewhere unexpected.
The switch-over was probably the best part. The second group walked into the studio with no clue what they were about to hear. To make things even better, our resident producer had metal blasting through the speakers as they came in just to keep everyone guessing.
Once the actual project was loaded up, the mood changed pretty quickly.
What emerged was a UKG-inspired track with loads of space for interpretation and plenty of directions it could go next. The foundations are there, and that's always the exciting bit. You can start to hear the potential before the full picture exists.
Overall, the vibes were high, the ideas were flowing, and everyone left with something to build on.
Now comes the fun part.
